Our 2nd Family Friday Gardening on 6th March was a joyous sunny day  with 21 families participating in a celebration of International Womans’ Day.  With an invitation to create a present for a woman in their lives whom they love: herbs to preserve and to plant were introduced!

Children were delighted to find sparkles on the ground that indicated we celebrate our collaborative efforts. The Calistamon (bottle brush) trees were full of red blossoms that we stroked to harvest the sweet water we then tasted. Now we know why the rainbow lorikeets chatter delightfully!

We filled a large terra cotta pot with sticks, leaves, worm farm soil and sand. Then we planted it up with chamomile, nasturtiums, borage and mung beans.

Everyone then gathered around the tables colourfully set under the row of tall bottle brush trees with many kinds of dried herbs and carefully made pouches of lavender, bath scrub of calendula and teas of lemon verbena. A rosemary foot bath was available for a relaxing soak.

The children played on the climbing structure and inside the playroom. The adults explored the library and enjoyed meeting each other.

Picnic style, we devoured many herbed foods including a freshly made herb butter.

“She’s got the whole world in her hands’ was our closing song and families were all invited to return for the last Family Friday Gardening session on the 13th of March.
